It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. Most Ironman events have a strict time limit of 17 hours to complete the race. Ironman Hawaii is regarded as the most prestigious triathlon event worldwide
SWIM AROUND MANHATTAN
This annual swim is part of what is known as the Triple Crown of open water swimming. One of the three most well-known marathon swims. The 28.5 mile swim is a full circumnavigation around the island of Manhattan. This swim can last anywhere from 8-10 hours in temperatures of 62-70 degrees. Several vaccinations required for this polluted water swim.
Swimmers come from all over the world to tackle the "Everest" of swimming- the English Channel. Ever since Matthew Webb first successful Channel swim in 1875, thousands of swimmers have attempted to emulate his feat. The English Channel differs from other swims of a similar distance by it's complexity, you will be swimming in extremely cold water, approximately 58-62 degrees, without a wetsuit for 10 to 20 hours. You will need to train for at least one year in advance of this swim that happens from May to September. Wetsuit NOT allowed.
STRAIGHT OF GIBRALTAR
This swim is known as one of the toughest swimming challenges as less than 500 people have ever made it to the other side, far less than have ever climbed Mount Everest. Due to the dangers of passing ships, a guide boat will accompany your 4-7 hour swim in temperatures of approximately 62 degrees. Wetsuit allowed.
ESCAPE FROM ALCATRAZ
Top athletes from around the world come to San Francisco for this prestigious triathlon. Because of the currents, this swim is only suitable for confident swimmers who can comfortably swim 1.5 miles by open water freestyle stroke within 55-60 minutes. A 1.5 mile swim, followed by an 18 mile hilly bike ride, finally an eight mile trail run.
